Historic Modern Diner in Pawtucket, Rhode Island Officially Listed for Sale
Pawtucket, RI — [July 7, 2025] – After over four decades of cherished service to the Pawtucket community and countless memories made around its iconic booths, the family-owned Modern Diner – a nationally recognized historic landmark and culinary institution – is officially up for sale.
Housed in a rare 1940s Sterling Streamliner and nestled in the heart of Pawtucket, the Modern Diner has long been celebrated for its vintage charm, unique homemade breakfast specials, and deep roots in Rhode Island’s cultural and culinary history. As one of the first diners in the nation to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Modern Diner is more than a restaurant – it is a symbol of tradition and community pride.
In addition to its historic significance, the Modern Diner gained national attention when it was named one of Food Network’s Top 5 Diners in America, highlighted for its unforgettable Custard French Toast and welcoming atmosphere. The feature can be viewed at: Food Network Top 5 Diners.
“This is a bittersweet decision,” said Nick Demou, who grew up in Pawtucket and founded the business with his late father Arthur Demou in 1985. “The Modern Diner has been part of our family for generations and we’ve loved every moment of serving our neighbors, watching families grow, and being a source of comfort and nostalgia.”
While the decision to retire and sell is bittersweet, the family sees this as a moment of opportunity—not just for the diner, but for the city it calls home.
“This is an exciting time for the City of Pawtucket,” said Demou. “With new investments, developments, and attention coming into the area, we hope the next owner of the Modern Diner will be just as enthusiastic about this dynamic community and contributing to its future. We believe this is a unique opportunity to own a piece of history while being part of an energized new chapter for the city.”
“The iconic and beloved Modern Diner is part of the very fabric of Pawtucket,” said Mayor Donald Grebien. “Generations of families have enjoyed the Modern Diner’s delicious breakfasts and friendly service. I want to thank the Demou family for 40 years of running this wonderful establishment, and I wish them the best. The City of Pawtucket stands ready to work with the next owners of the Modern Diner to continue its legacy for generations to come.”
During the transition, the Modern Diner will remain fully operational and continue to be run by the family. Guests can expect the same warm service, classic dishes, and familiar faces throughout the process.
The sale includes the iconic diner car structure, the business, real estate, and its longstanding goodwill in the community. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Brian LaFauci at Won Strategy at (401) 533-3991.
